Some of the code fixes ported/cherry-picked from justinstenning/pondjs and various other forks, thanks!

  • chore: dependency updates, build fixes, compatibility fixes
  • chore: update to TypeScript 4.9 and subsequently TypeScript 5.8
  • fix: fix failing unit test
  • many other fixes..

Just opening this as FYI, not expecting these changes to be merged. I will be maintaining my fork over at fkleon/pond.
