Mobile Glitch: Single Location Displayed as Stacked
on Obsidian mobile MapView 5.5.0, some (not all, criteria unsure) single locations are displays as stacked on top of each other. The number seems random. I have checked that i only have saved 1 instance of those locations in my entire vault, it seems to be a glitch on MapView
one example, many other also exist with different numbers:
all of these "👤" lead to the same instance of in-line location saved in the same note file
Wow that's super weird.
- Do you also use the same version of Map View on desktop and it never happens there?
- Even if it doesn't happen on desktop, can you open the Obsidian Developer Console (Ctrl+Shift+I) and send any errors you may see there? (it's much more tricky on mobile, so I hope there are hints on desktop)
- Assuming it's the same geolocations that cause the issue, can you share one of them as an example (the whole note if possible)?
thanks for replying, @esm7,
1
yes. both is 5.5.0. on Mac, this issue doesn't exist now and never existed before. the same location viewed on Mac:
2
yes:
do you see anything? i can't tell. or do you need me to do anything else to troubleshoot?
3
yes. just something extra: on further observation, it seems that among all the locations i saved in my system, it is always the same locations that exhibit this glitch, BUT:
- the number of "stacked" locations are random, all of their numbers are different every time when i reopen the map
- most of them are consistently being displayed as such every time i reopen the map, but some of them are only sometimes being displayed as such and other times are just normal
this is the same note i used as the example previously: i keep getting the prompt that i "Failed to upload" the md file on here when i dragged it in, i'll just paste it here:
title: friendA
---
locations:
- inline
---
- [l] locations
- [friendA's place](geo:40.030315,116.351511) tag:kin-kith tag:been
this is with any privacy related info removed. in the original, the person's name is in Chinese characters (could that be the trigger? many notes that exhibit this issue either have Chinese character as note's title or as in-line location title)
I think the Chinese characters are the most likely cause. It would be of great help if you could try to pinpoint this further, as I don't think I will likely be able to recreate the issue based on your example which looks fine! Maybe Chinese characters, or specific characters that cause trouble, in the in-line location title? This could explain why mobile handles them differently. If that's the case, would love to get an example that includes such characters.
i just tested a couple more times. the results are very inconsistent:
- many locations that previously had this issue didn't show this issue in my test, only a couple of them showed this issue every time in the test
- there is no shared characters among all locations that have this issue - they have different ones, across all, none in common
- there is one that shows this issue, and has ONLY english words as note title and as in-line location title - no Chinese characters
i can send non-people-related ones to avoid privacy concerns. how should i send the whole md notes as it seems i'm unable to do it on here?
When commenting there's a "paste, drop or click to add files" button below the text box, you should be able to attach an md file this way.
it won't allow me to do it do you have another way suitable for both of us to receive them?
aside from the people ones, these 2 are the ones that consistently exhibit this issue, every time, and also, on 2 different phones synced via Obsidian Sync; and they are exact copies
new observation:
these stacked single locations are shown even when using the filter "path" to show all in-line locations in one note
Guess Github doesn't like md files :-/ Zipping them into an archive should work, can you try?
there you go! @esm7
i looked at them again just now. still showing the issue:
let me know if they also show the issue on your end
So, the bad news is that no matter what I tried, I couldn't recreate the issue. The good news is that maybe (it's a shot in the dark... but definitely possible) it's somewhat related to the fact I'm running a development version of Map View (6.0.0 which isn't ready yet), and it includes major changes to the same mechanisms that should prevent duplicity in markers. Trying to reproduce on Map View 5.5.0 will be a little complicated in my environment... Would you be interested in trying the new version to check if the revised mechanisms helped with this issue as well? Note that it will require you to back up your plugin settings (data.json from the plugins/obsidian-map-view directory), as they are not backwards-compatible.
Yes I am interested in trying if the new version solves the issue. But I didn't follow precisely, is that a beta version now, that I have to download and configure in a special way? I can wait for the public release, if that can saves me from the tinkering.
This issue is not function-critical, practically, it just makes the map a little confusing to look at, but still very much usable.
Thank you so much for your effort on this amazing tool!
Yes, it is a beta version that definitely requires some tinkering. If you're good with waiting, then we can sure wait for the release and hope it solves the issue 🤞
oh yeah, i am very good at waiting, especially considering that you've been working on this for your passion and the benefits of other people.
yes let's hope so🤞🏼 i'll be checking the in-app plugins updater intermittently going forward. and i'll let you know on here once i've tested it.
thanks again
