Touchpad suddenly freezes
I just installed Ubuntu 16.04. Have you encountered this issue? Sometimes, apparently without any pattern, the touchpad freezes. 2-fingers scroll does work though, the nipple and click buttons also work. I think, although I'm not sure, if I tap the touchpad with two fingers it unfreezes (but this may be a series of uncorrelated events). There is a question on Ask Ubuntu with exactly the same issue. Unanswered, unfortunately.
No, I haven't experienced that.
The only thing I've experienced is this that I can enter some sort of vertical scrolling mode.
To do that I touch the top left of touch pad with one finger (left hand) and at the same time touch the center of touchpad with another finger (right hand) and move the right finger up and down. Then the window starts to scroll vertically. Sometimes I can also take away the left finger and it still scrolls vertically while moving the right finger. If I press once with the right finger I get out of this vertical scrolling mode.
My guess is the vertical scrolling mode that I see is just the expected behavior. I am not so used to touch pads.
You could always boot up your laptop with an Ubuntu 18.04 USB stick and see if the touch pad behaves differently. Maybe it is a difference between Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04.
Hi,
I've got a HP 850 G5 too, and I've installed Fedora 29. So far I had this issue (unable to exit scrolling mode) only once. So wait & see.
I've had this issue occasionally. Two-finger tapping or right clicking with the hardware button seems to break out of it.
Joining to the party with HP 850 G5 Ubuntu 16.04 4.15.0-96-generic. Usually this happens with hold&drag kind of use cases, really annoying. Mouse does not move any more, buttons seems to work, also pressing the pad seems active
I have small script which recovers the problem:
sudo rmmod i2c_hid
sudo modprobe i2c_hid
The tip to recover with some double tap gesture/hardware key is also working, not always though, so I will keep my script. I could not spot any workaround from forums.
