Pull in the 5 divergent commits from Alars fork

I'm using Alar's fork https://github.com/alarofrunetotem/lcurse atm because this version stopped working for me about a year ago on Debian 9. @ephraim could you have a look at the 5 commits Alar is ahead of you? It would be good to have everything in one spot again. I don't know why he didn't create pull requests.
