Rework main landing page for documentation

It would be good to review and rework the main landing page for the Traits documentation.

In particular, it would be desirable to have a brief introduction to Traits on that page (or at a minimum, a couple of paragraphs explaining what Traits is) that precedes the more detailed tutorial and user guide.
