Could that have been related to the former logic for closing CQL sessions?
This doesn't really make it simpler, does it? But you seem to be on to something here...
This turned out harder than it should be, unless someone in the community digs into it a lot, we won't be able to finish this PR.
Did you have the chance to check if this was solved by the recent releases?

Commit requests are now sent only before a `poll` takes place. The new `committableSink` implementation doesn't use the `parallelism` setting anymore. With #1111 `commitsInProgress` will be logged for slow or...
This fails consistently, I'll need to find time to investigate it.
