Feature Request - Save SMTP password

Open Victoryus-HU opened this issue 4 months ago • 3 comments

Hello, Our company is planning an IT transition in the coming weeks. We have archived our old GMAIL emails in MBOX format, but occasionally colleagues need access to them.

I want to create a zip file that can be extracted to any user's computer and it's pre-configured (MBOX/Home locations, SMTP settings, etc.). However, the program does not read the SMTP password from the settings file.

The ideal solution would be if the password could be stored in an encrypted form. But if that’s not possible / complicated, it’s fine to save the original password as well, since this smtp user is very limited from server side.

Is there a solution for this? I don’t think what I’m asking for is complicated — maybe the program already supports it and I’m just doing it wrong, or it should be relatively simple to implement.

@Victoryus-HU

I am not sure what you plan to do. A given Mbox files can be accessed by any user, no need for SMPT password.

SMPT password is needed if a user needs to forward archive mails to another user via SMPT server.

Please clarify what you would like to do with archive mail files in MBOX format that require SMPT password. Currently, SMPT password in not stored in MBox Viewer configuration registry/configuration file for security reasons.

Thank You

You are right. However, colleagues are expected to be able to forward emails to their Live Mailbox with ease. Since they use Outlook Web app, exporting emails is not ideal. We have created an SMTP user that can only send emails to internal colleagues, and we want to pre-set this.

Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate you taking the time to look into my case.

As I mentioned it is not wise to store raw password in the configuration file. Possibly some sort of free password manager (native for Windows?) could be used but I did not investigate such option and I am not familiar how this would work. I will take a look but no promises.
