[Bug] Missing Meteor Trails

Open espiox opened this issue 1 year ago • 8 comments

I’ve spotted another graphical effect that’s missing: in OR2SP on PS2 (not sure about other console versions) the meteors have bright yellow trails when they fly in, but in C2C PC, they have no effect at all:

Sorry for the rough photos, I couldn’t get direct screenshots at the moment.

Any chance someone could check if C2C xbox includes this? I wonder if it's similar to the car shadow and just got removed in PC. (the car shadow & that meteor effect both use alpha transparency, maybe old 2006-era PC GPUs had some performance issues with them?)

Also does anyone know if Lindbergh O2SP included these at all? Didn't seem like there were any functions in there related to it...

I watched multiple Xbox playthroughs of Heart Attack mode and didn't even see "Dodge the Meteors" pop up (nor did I see "Pass the Convoy"). Did later ports add more challenges?

On a similar note, there's an unused "Hit the Ducks" mission that Howard hacked back in.

I can confirm that C2C Xbox includes the trails effect, although they look a little more basic than the version in SP PS2 (that could be an emulator issue I guess):

Here's a better SP PS2 screenshot for comparison:

Talking about emulation, how's OR2006/OR2SP emulation now on the newly released PCSX2 v2.0?

It’s good! I’ve been playing SP on the nightly builds for the last few weeks. There’s still minor slowdown on occasion (at least on Steam Deck), but it otherwise runs really well.

I looked through the texture dumps while playing the mission, and didn't see anything that resembled meteor trails. So I think our best bet to start with would be to extract the trail from the PS2/Xbox versions, and work from there.

Have you found any textures for the meteor itself? Haven't been able to find anything in the code related to it yet, if we can find the package it's kept in maybe can use that to find where it gets loaded

I don't remember seeing them, but I'll check again in a bit. I can try dumping PCSX2 as well.

Found it. obj_tour_pmt BC36EF0D. I looked through the PCSX2 dump, but I didn't see it. It probably got dumped, but PCSX2 produces a lot of garbage duplicate files. Even after using a few programs to remove the duplicates, I didn't see anything that I thought might've been a meteor trail. There's this yellow gradient texture (ee846dfba16f3a17-00000d80, 64x8), but it doesn't look like the meteor trail.
