Need to enter custom-1.3 to work?

I don't know much about kernel modules, but was having a problem where it says "dkms.conf not found" when doing the dkms build step on Xubuntu 12.04.

Someone on a forum had suggested replacing custom-1.2 with custom-1.3 and this caused it to work.

This is incomplete info due to my unfamiliarity with the fix, but maybe someone can suggest the right updates to the scripts/README?
