Maybe with an optional toggle to turn it into a two pane layout. Similar to Androids behavior on tablets: 
Try [`adw-gtk-theme`](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/adw-gtk-theme) and select the `Adw` theme for usage with legacy applications.
 Getting a completely different icon then the one your screenshot shows. Most likely your icon theme is at fault.
