Running against content of one table cell, whole table is replaced

When working with a table, I sometimes want to run NoteHighlight against the contents of one cell. If I select the code in that one cell, then apply NoteHighlight, it removes the entire table and all its contents, and gives me just the formatted code that I had selected.

Thankfully, ctrl-Z fixed it. But wow, that was scary.

As a workaround, I copy/paste into a new text block, apply NoteHighlight, then copy/paste back into my table cell.
