Cron triggered workflows running more than once

I am running distributed elsa 2.9 and have many workflows that are just a cron timer and a custom activity. Some times these workflows run more than once, they are scheduled to run once a day. My custom activity does some polling in it and isn't always quick, from what I can gather this isn't a good practice? I'm trying to learn where I went wrong and what I shouldn't expect to work properly in Elsa with a fairly default configuration. I have removed the polling part of my custom activities and hope that they run better tomorrow. Can anyone please shed some light on this issue or point me towards something to read up on?
