Pillar-Boxing for 4:3 games?

I've got a d3d8 game with a 4:3 aspect ratio (Rosso Rabbit in Trouble, demo available here). I tried various fullscreen options, but they only seemed to set the resolution of my 1440p display to 1920x1440, meaning that I had black bars to the left and right when alt-tabbing to a different application.

How can I make dxwrapper output a 2560x1440 (16:9) picture with the 1920x1440 3d render in the middle and black bars to the left and right, so that my video output resolution doesn't get messed up?

You can try the fullscreenwindowmode setting and have your GPU scaling set to integer scaling (both Nvidia's control panel and AMD's Adrenalin have settings for that).

dxwrapper doesn't have any features to customize the resolution of DX8 or DX9 games. If the game can select the native resolution of 1920x1440 then you can set the game to 1920x1440 and configure your monitor settings to display 4:3, which will cause the monitor to show the black bars.
