Dog house save icon easter egg (enhancement idea)

Open matheusvb3 opened this issue 1 year ago • 8 comments

In the PS2, the radio icon that is used for SH2 save files in the memory card manager is changed to a bouncing cartoony dog house if the player has gotten the dog ending, which can be seen here. I thought it would be cool if the PC version of the game had something similar, tough it is obviously not something super important for the project. Maybe we can discuss in this issue whether this would be a good and feasible idea, and how the project could go with implementing something like that.

This is a cute idea! But I'm not sure it could be utilized for the PC version. Those fun, animated 3D graphics are used for the PS2 memory card manager, as you've mentioned. Since save files for the PC version are solely handled through the game's Save/Load screen, I unfortunately don't think anything like this could be implemented.

Yes, I was thinking of some ways that such an easter egg could be translated to a PC game and unfortunately there's no way to make something functionally similar. I'm aware of some games that implement obscure easter eggs in the form of creating files in the player's computer and some even go as far as changing the desktop background (some amateur "horror" games do that for a scare), but I find that extremely unprofessional and cheap. The closest that could be achieved in PC I think would be to have the icon for the radio in the pause menu be changed to a dog house, perhaps under rare circumstances (getting the dog ending is pretty rare enough by itself!), so that completionists get to see it and go "oh, cool!" If you are OK with it, maybe we could use this issue to come up with other ideas?

Absolutely. I would not be comfortable doing something like that. Anything our project does needs to stay within the realm of the project itself, if that makes sense.

Sure thing. But if you discuss Easter Eggs out loud before they even exist are they still considered Easter Eggs? 🤔 I actually have an idea or two for simple, fun Easter Eggs... just some small things that would give reason for old players to go back and explore this game's hauntingly beautiful world all over again.

...and, did you know? There already exists an Easter Egg in our project. It's been there for a few years now but you can't see it through normal means. 😉 🥚

You bring up a good point, maybe it would be best to leave it to the developers and project leaders to decide how it will be implemented, but I was thinking of dedicating this ticket to a "brainstorming session" on how that easter egg could be translated to PC, if it would be of any assistance to the project developers. Kind of similar to the easter egg where the monitors the dog is looking at are surveillance camera footage (an easter egg inide another easter egg? Eggception!), which was implemented in EE and received input from the fans.

Interesting, I didn't know that! I'm pretty sure you already know that but I only recently found out that the vanilla game has a secret message in the hotel lobby if you return with the flashlight and check the boiler.

😆 I've been calling them "EEEE," or "Enhanced Edition Easter Eggs," haha.

Yeah! That one took me a year or two to find it on my own back in the day. I actually came across this secret because I love the game so much and kept replaying it to find new things each time within the environments. I want to invoke that type of intrigue/curiosity again with a new Easter Egg or two for other players. :)

Yes! If things come to mind, please share.

Hey @Polymega I had an idea but I'm not sure if it would be feasible, so I'd be interested in your input: what if the globlet-like symbol in the top right of the Enhanced Edition setup tool became a dog house if the player has obtained the Dog ending? I thought of maybe replacing the radio for a dog house as the Enhanced Edition configuration tool icon, but I believe it's not possible for applications to change their own icons on Windows. Do you think that could be done? Of course, it's a very inconsequential idea, but for a relatively obscure easter egg...

@Polymega I know you're busy in the moment but I was wondering, do you have a resource on how SH2's saves work? I could implement a PoC with the idea I mentioned in my last comment.

Oops, I closed it accidentally. Frankly Github's UI isn't very intuitive. 😵‍💫
