Feature request: make it possible to use substitutions like "!.!" and "!&" in the command line

Midnight Commander has had this for ages in the form of "%s", "%f", "%d", etc.

I am aware that Files => Apply command exists, but it seems like an unnecessary extra step.

How would you run a shell command that includes these sequences in their shell meaning, then?
