I believe this should be a system-wide pause command (MPRIS) and should not be limited to only VLC. I don't think the player should care what sleep state the system...

Well, in my tests it actually worked (at least when toggling play/pause a few times or something), but I guess it should display buffering and handle this a bit better...
We thought a bit about this and agreed that it is definitely not an essential feature. Maybe it could be added some time later if there is enough demand for...
We're not opposed to it though, so patches enabling that (at least for URLs given as command line parameter) are welcome, but Tom is not going to spend his time...
