Wingpanel stays black until hovering over dock after minimizing all windows using wmctrl

I set up a shortcut that allows me to show the desktop (minimize all windows) using wmctrl. The shortcut runs this command:

wmctrl -k on

When I use my shortcut or run this command from the terminal to show the desktop when windows are maximized, the wingpanel remains black when the desktop is shown, but only until I hover the mouse pointer over the dock. Then wingpanel becomes transparent. I only experience the issue when I have a window maximized and use my shortcut/issue the command (not when there are windows that are open but not maximized).

This doesn't happen when I use the native minimize shortcut (Super+H)--the wingpanel immediately becomes transparent then. It's only with the wmctrl command that shows the desktop.
