Sometimes Night Light doesn't start
Prerequisites
- [x] I have searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
Describe the bug
Occasionally, after logging in, the night light indicator is missing and the color adjustments do not take effect. Making changes via System Settings (e.g. turning Night Light off and back on) doesn't help. After rebooting, everything usually works again.
Unlike issue #40, the indicator is entirely absent (as opposed to simply being invisible)
Unlike issue #47, the workaround (killall gsd-color
) has no effect (gsd-color: no process found
).
To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- Be unlucky.
Expected behavior
Night light adjusts the colors as expected (provided it should at this time of day). The indicator is visible and
Logs
Would love to provide helpful logs. Don't know which ones to share though.
Platform Information
- [ ] I'm using the latest version from git that I've manually compiled
- [x] I'm using the latest released stable version
Using the proprietary Nvidia drivers: 440.64
Additional context
Most of the time Night Light works.
Thanks for your bug report, can you provide the output of journalctl -t gsd-color
which might provide useful information.
Sure:
$ journalctl -t gsd-color
-- Logs begin at Wed 2020-02-12 13:12:54 CET, end at Tue 2020-03-31 22:17:02 CEST. --
-- No entries --
I'm having the same problem. After logging in night light does not take effect. Even if I turn it off and on again. Although using this command killall gsd-color
starts the night light.
@tintou Under what circumstances does journalctl -t gsd-color
produce output?
Today night light did not start again. I tried the command both before and after the then obligatory killall gsd-color
. The logs keep saying "-- No entries --".
How can the issue be solved so that users don't always have to use the command line workaround?
Especially with regard to https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-pantheon-shell/pull/233 and the fact that nightlight is also very prominently represented in onboarding, it would be wonderful if we could find a solution here. Could you imagine to work on it? Or someone else in the team or in the community? @tintou @meisenzahl Because of this issue, night light is currently still a great feature, but most of the time I have to adjust it manually via the console to make it work. The knowledge about a workaround needs more than everyday knowledge.
