Randomized freezing in latest elementary OS
Prerequisites
- [x] I have searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
Describe the bug
In the latest ISO off the website (could also be previous ones, but I've only tested the newest), a fresh or already used elementary install seems to be freezing or crashing randomly during use of the system.
I believe this might have something to do with dedicated nvidia graphics, as this never happened on my Core 2-based machine that ran using integrated graphics.
PCs I've tested now: i7-4730, GTX 1650: freezes i3-550M, 9400M graphics: freezes Core 2 Quad Q6600, intel gma graphics: doesn't freeze
There's an original reddit post here, some other people had this issue too.
To Reproduce
There's no real way to reproduce this. It seems to randomly freeze up and die from about 5-15 minutes since hitting the login.
Expected behavior
The system should run fine with no freezes.

Additional context
If something like music is playing in the background when it freezes up, the music will just stop. Cursor also gets stuck too and the only real way to recover from it is holding the PC's power button and turning it back on.
I have the same problems on a Xiaomi Notebook Pro (i7-8550u, 16gb ram, MX150), after updating all of the packages through the AppCenter.
I'd be happy to provide any logs or output of commands if needed.
Hey @ThatTonybo and @Aimless321, are you using the proprietary nvidia drivers, or are you using the nouveau drivers when this happens? Can you try and capture any logs after a crash? For example, if possible, any error output from /var/log/syslog
or /var/log/kern.log
would help a lot!
@kgrubb How would we go about this? Reboot the computer then go copy them? Also, I believe I am using the proprietary drivers, as they appear in the AppCenter under drivers.
It seems like it was the proprietary nvidia driver. I updated to the latest version in the appcenter, and haven't had any issues since.
i see so many people talk about Nvidia. which makes it hard for AMD users to find fixes. I have this same issue but on a full Ryzen system.
ryzen 3 1200 amd rx580
stock drivers untouched.
the os will just freeze after a certain amount of time. Other than a restart fixes it until it freezes again. Hopefully the good folks here can find a fix. Some of the fixes are for NVIDIA so i am unsure what to do for my amd card if the case is gpu drivers

sticking with the light theme seemed to stop the the freezing for me. So now i guess i can isolate it to the dark them being the cause of the random freezes
I've been dealing with this also. Can't seem to find where the hangup is coming from. Trying to push past it, but I may need to revert back to Pop_OS! for now because it keeps getting in the way of my workflow.

my cursor freezes randomly after waking up from sleep mode. 9 out of 10 wake ups work properly..
