At this point I must somehow think of the roadmap of Tails. They are considering offering an integrated backup solution. https://tails.boum.org/blueprint/backups/ That would be exciting in the context of initial-setup and installer as well for elementary OS, wouldn't it?

For example, I can highly recommend https://www.borgbackup.org/, which is also mentioned in the Tails Blueprint. There is now also a graphical interface to https://github.com/borgbase/vorta, but it's not exactly suitable for elementary OS. At borg almost everything is implemented in the client and only little in the server. That would of course be a piece of work for a client in Vala.
