Put sample text in the connect to Windows server dialog to help the user

Open codygarver opened this issue 7 years ago • 4 comments

Put sample text in the field to help the user to fill out the form. At the moment empty fields are not very helpful.

I would recommend :

  • [ ] server: 12.34.56.78
  • [ ] folder: nothing
  • [x] Domain name: WORKGROUP

PR #576 places "WORKGROUP" by default in the Windows domain field.

I am unsure whether putting a mock ip address into the server field is a good idea. It is possible to put a server name into this field also (at least for AFP and FTP connections - I assume also for SMB connections).

Please also clarify whether sample text is considered appropriate only for Windows connections or whether they could be helpful also for other connections. For the server field at least the connection type should not matter.

Is there a reason to put "nothing" in the folder field rather than "/"?

Note: It seems that currently, Windows Share browsing on gvfs is broken for recent samba installs at least due to changes to Samba browsing protocol. Connecting via the connect dialog should still work.

Only partially fixed and bounty outstanding.
