Files : Large data transfer to USB 2.0 HDD timeout

Open jeepguy2x opened this issue 5 years ago • 7 comments

During a large data transfer (35GB) from my local drive to a USB 2.0 external HD, the transfer consistently times out after only a few gigabytes. I've tried two different external USB 2.0 drives and have the same issue. The drive seems to go into power-save mode as if it was no longer being accessed. The transfer dialog shows that the data transfer is still in progress but never moves after the drive times out. When I access the drive from another Files window, it will spin up and display the directory as expected, but the transfer never resumes. This has been tried with a Western Digital USB 2.0 external drive and a Seagate drive.

Is it a single large file? What is the file-type?

I am seeing this as well with various USB 3.0 drives. No rhyme or reason to the file size; they could be 5GB, 8GB, or 30GB+. Issue seems to be consistent with anything over 5GB in size. Drives are formatted out GPT, ext2/3/4.

No error message is generated during the issue - an open Files window and the file transfer progress window simply both disappear from the screen, and the transfer stops.

I am also seeing the issue listed in #1386.

I needed to move 270GB of files from one drive to another yesterday. Because of the issue, the process was start and stop.

Workaround - booted into a LIVE USB stick of Elementary OS, and transferred the files in under 45 minutes with no issue.

Version affected:

Elementary OS 5.1.6 Hera Built on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS Linux 5.3.0-62-generic GTK 3.22.30

Version on the Live USB stick which functions:

Elementary OS 5.1.5 Hera Built on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS Linux 5.3.0-53-generic GTK 3.22.30

I was doing some work on file transfers here #1154. Its something I need to get back to. In the meantime I would use a specialist app like Grsync for moving large quantities of files.

For me Files just hangs after a few seconds after the transfer starts and then shows the "Files is not responding.... wait or force quit" error. The progress bar on the icon was still updating so i waited and managed to transfer everything in the end. After that i had to force quit Files (that was still frozen) to see if everything was transferred correctly.

I'm on Elementary OS 5.1.7 and i was copying files from a external hdd (usb 2.0) to my laptop

Leaving open but low priority as moving very large amounts of data is best handled by Grsync or similar.
