Whats New log
Problem
Updates are automatic these days. People dont get what new stuff landed
Proposal
A tab allowing to see from metainfo, the new versions and what they brought with them
Prior Art (Optional)
No response
@teamcons can you elaborate on what's missing here? We already show release information in the appinfo view
The idea here would rather be to have a tab that aggregates those informations into a chronological view Something in this vein:
Last updated: Jorts - september 3 - (last release text and version) Reminduck - September 1 - (last release text) Cherrypick - August 15 - (last release text)
Allowing people to check at a glance what happened recently. If an app misbehave it would also allow to identify if an update borked it and which
We could eventually add update available info in this timeline if it isnt automatic, and the user wants to know what theyd update for. But then this would make more sense as a revamped update pate
@teamcons is this perhaps a duplicate of #36 then?
The one you refer to would be the ordering of installed apps, not the chronological aggregation of app release info to display in a new tab
@teamcons could you elaborate a bit more on the problem you're seeking to solve? I'm having a lot of trouble understanding the motivation here and how the current feature set isn't meeting your needs and how this isn't a duplicate of #36. Tell me more about what it is you'd like to accomplish but can't currently do
This proposition: I would like to know what update has been done automatically on my system since last week I do not want to cycle through every app, cycle through the release notes, and compare dates I just want to check what new feature i have got since last week. A digest.
something that reads like below, in a separate tab:
"Thursday 13 of august: Music 8.1.1: -added library -fixed crash on mpeg4 files
Monday 09 of august: Jorts 5.5: -Rewritten in rust
Amberol 6.1: -New: Minimode -Improved ram usage ..."
Proposition #36 has nothing to do about what update has been done. You wrote about ordering installed apps by order of install. It means the tab looks like:
- Jorts
- Reminduck
- Amberol
- Gimp
- Elementary Music
- Elementary Video
Instead of
- Amberol
- Elementary Music
- Elementary Video
- Gimp
- Jorts
- Reminduck
It does not relate in any capacity with informing the user on what recent feature landed recently. It does not aid in knowing what new feature landed The point of a Whats New tab would be to advertise what new feature landed
Thanks for clarifying! I think I get what you're looking for now 😊
@teamcons does this feel like it satisfies your request?
- [x] Apps are sorted by their newest releases
- [x] Shows release dates instead of version numbers
- [x] You can easily get to release notes
Anything missing?
Edit: oh actually I'm seeing that you have the datetime as a header instead of information in the row. That's interesting 🤔
Ah i was more thinking of an aggregated stream of release notes themselves But this is also really cool. One can see at a glance what were the last updates, and what came with them I'd say it fits the bill :)
