Summary

Notifications in Element are problematic:

  • User expectations vary wildly depending on the context of and how high traffic their communication is
  • Over time, notifications are cumbersome to manage
  • Push notifications don't work reliably

Intended Outcome

Improve utility, reliability and usability of Notifications all round, including adding a Notification Centre.

How about separate notification settings for desktop and mobile?

On desktop you can keep them noisy and close the client if you get annoyed.

On mobile I've forcefully turned off all of the notifications for the app, while I would like to keep PM's on and channels on mentions.

Does this also include showing contact photos for apple notifications?
