Message management: Starring, pinning & mark as unread

Open jakewb-b opened this issue 3 years ago • 4 comments

Summary More advanced management of individual messages.

Intended outcome Users should have tools enabling them to achieve common required outcomes such as:

  • Starring/saving messages to more easily locate in the future
  • Pinning messages so they appear at the top of a room (or prominently displayed in a room)
  • Marking messages as unread, so that they display in the room list as having unread messages

This feature should be designed by considering the "Store tagged events" in Room Account Data MSC2437

I will ask SCT to review and eventually merge it

@jakewb-b @daniellekirkwood Hi do you know whether a plan have been defined on this feature, or not yet?

Hey, is there any place where users can vote for particular feature in the Element roadmap please? I can see this feature is in the column "Later" and pretty low, even behind video calls.

Personally, I consider the "Mark unread" feature as a crucial one for a standard operation during my work day. When I come to the office, I read all the messages, sort them by "need my attention now / later" and I would like to mark as unread those messages which need my attention later.

This feature is present in Teams, Slack, Outlook but ... not in Element. Is there any chance to prioritize this feature a bit higher?

Thanks a lot.

@mhavelka not explicitly, but people often add a reaction to the original issue and we take any positive emoji (a thumbs up, a heart, a rocket ship... just about anything except a thumbs down, really!) as representing a vote in favour of it. Voting by users doesn't directly impact the roadmap, but we do notice it and take it into account, and it does impact how we score and stack-rank items.

In this case, this is a much requested and much-wanted issue, including by people within Element. I'm hoping that some upcoming work might result in it moving up the priority list, but I need to confirm that and then update the public roadmap accordingly, so please bear with us.
