Unsure what 'chat backup out of sync' means

Hello,

Element X looks great!

I just started using it, and see the following:

I have my recovery key, and can enter it I suppose. But what is the chat backup that is allegedly out of sync? I haven't set up a local back-up – is this about retrieving encrypted messages from the server? Or is there some overlap with the 'regular' element client?

Lots of questions, but I guess mainly a request to improve the explanation.
