Linkified #vector:matrix.org takes me to the wrong room

It takes me to the old #vector:matrix.org room - now a private room, rather than the current public Vector room
This is presumably because we didn't clean up the canonical alias or aliases of the old vector room when we repointed its directory?
it isn't actually; it's a fundamental issue with whether we treat m.room.aliases or the room directory as the source of truth as to where aliases point :( If i click on #vector:matrix.org in my client it still takes me to the 'wrong' room rather than #riot:matrix.org.
I just tested it both by entering the url as well as sending the room alias in a chat and cliking it. it took me to #riot:matrix.org but maybe something has changed or i didn't take the proper steps to reproduce
According to the discussion we had when I asked about it a while ago, this only happens to people who are in the "old" #vector:matrix.org room. So most people won't be able to reproduce this issue.
