High CPU Usage in Background

Steps to reproduce

I have Element running on Debian. Frequently I notice that the fans are starting and running for a while, while I am not doing anything heavy on the laptop. A look at htop reveals Element to be the culprit in most cases, sometimes staying at 30-50% for a long while, while the window is closed and only the icon in the Taskbar is active.
