Extensible profile data to show user's TZ, clients, etc.
As soon as Matrix provides an extensible profile, we should publish user's TZ and UA data etc in it.
from this #riot post of mine....
dcg_mx I've been wondering if it would be worth adding some location information to user profiles? Mainly timezone as a UTC offset but possibly Country, State, and preferred Language.
dcg_mx If they were made "required" at signup time, BUT there was the option to explicitly set "UNKNOWN" for each value for those who don't want it made available. As one of the main uses I have for Matrix, is to provide support to users of LedgerSMB (in #ledgersmb) and those users are distributed globally, being able to check on their timezone to determine when they may be available would be useful.
Yaniel (also what's the point of "required" but "unknown" being a valid value )
dcg_mx Having required but allowing unknown, provides for those that want to opt-out but makes it an opt-out rather than a case of "too lazy to fill in those fields"
Yaniel and people are online during different times of the day even within one timezone
dcg_mx Obviously people will be around at varying times of the day/night, however, we often find ourselves trying to negotiate suitable times to make ourselves available (or one of the other team members in an appropriate TZ) to have least impact on a user. This gets much easier if their TZ is known in terms of UTC
Keyword: time zone
I'd really like to see time zone on people's profiles. Use case: knowing when someone is probably asleep so you don't bug them.
In addition to timezone information being available at all, ideally I'd like to be able to see that simply by hovering the name or avatar of someone in a conversation, with a user card that also shows a bigger version of their profile picture (because the ones in the conversation view are tiny) without needing to click to open a sidebar everytime.
This is how such user "card" popovers look like in Mattermost, for what it's worth:
