Mac: "ShipIt" using 99% CPU
Steps to reproduce
I've only seen this happen once, so I'm not sure how much help it'll be, but I figured I should report it anyway.
My Intel iMac is usually quiet, but the fans had been running at a low speed for an hour or so. Eventually I looked in Activity Monitor and found that "ShipIt" was using 99% CPU.
I did Inspect Process on ShipIt, and under Open Files I could see that it had some Element files open. I then quit Element, which didn't make ShipIt go away.
Next, I quit (not force quit) ShipIt via Activity Monitor. This made Element start up again. Quitting it a second time resulted in the fans spinning back down, and I've subsequently opened Element again and it's still being quiet.
Outcome
What did you expect?
I don't know what ShipIt is, but I wouldn't expect it to use 99% CPU for an extended period.
What happened instead?
See above.
Operating system
macOS 12.3.1
Application version
Element 1.10.13
How did you install the app?
From https://element.io/get-started
Homeserver
matrix.org
Will you send logs?
Yes
It looks like ShipIt is an iOS development tool - were the files it was holding open related to Element Desktop or Element iOS?
The files were part of /Applications/Element.app, the desktop Mac version. I didn't think to save the actual list of open files.
Digging a little deeper, ShipIt is included inside Element: Contents/Frameworks/Squirrel.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ShipIt.
it's also not an iOS development tool specifically - looks like an image compressor actually.
Hmm... I had sent a PNG image around the time that the issue occurred, but I've just retested with the same image a couple of times and the problem has not reoccurred.
Shipit == Squirrel, ie. our update framework, so somehow this has apparently gone awry. Unfortunately there will be nothing in the rageshake logs, although if this happens again, squirrel has logs in ~Library/Caches/im.riot.app.ShipIt/
Now that you mention it, yes, I think there had been an update prompt earlier in the day. The relevant part of ShipIt_stderr.log is attached.
I'm now experiencing this as well on an Apple M1. Not really sure why. It's a very new laptop, only 2 weeks old.

I received an update prompt from Kaleidoscope.app
earlier today, and followed through with the update.
A "soft" terminate of the process allowed it to relaunch with normal (tiny) CPU load.
I also wonder what this is all about, as I just saw this:

Had ShipIt running at 100% today on MBP16,1. Running Ventura 13.0 release installed yesterday (external SSD). "Soft" terminate in activity monitor made the process go away. I'll report back if it re-appears after reboot.
Edit: ShipIt didn't reappear after reboot.
I have an old Macbook air that I use only searching the web. Inadvertently launched the WhatsApp (that does not have an account associated) app and the fan starter to run like crazy. Then I found the ShipIt process running at 99%. So, it could be a mysterious application related to WhatsApp.
Just tried with my MBP16,1 under Monterey - started WhatsApp but no signs of ShipIt, also after terminating WhatsApp again. Anyway, different setting. I'll also try with Ventura later.

macos 13,Ventura。My shiplt process was created by bilibili and when I tried to forcibly terminate the process, the Bilibili client opened automatically. Originally the Bilibili client was closed and not running in the background.
What's the connection to Element for the last few comments? It's not mentioned at all, instead talking about other apps.
@Behodar It seems to be a general problem with ShipIt, I ended up here, after a google search, because the same issue happened in the mem.ai app, which is also unrelated to Element.
Apologies, I was a little terse with my comment. It seems that this may not be an issue with Element (and its ShipIt integration) but rather a problem with ShipIt itself. But I'm probably not the best person to log a ShipIt bug since I know nothing about how Element etc. actually make use of it.
I found this bug the same way, quick google search. Turns out for me it was Postman, so looks like it isn't the applications themselves causing the issue.
STOP IT, my Mackbook Pro randomly running ShipiT process in background when I just watch Youtube in Safari with 90+ C degree and 4k RPM. Fixit now or maybe this is 0day backdoor for hackers?

I found this extension problem - https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardForSafari/issues/719#issuecomment-1207180765 Delete this AdGuard For Safari and problem partially can be solved.
I didn't have AdGuard running when this happened. Hasn't ran in months, actually.

Yea, temporary solution it's use Google Chrome for Youtube, Safari not use correct video decoder and have this trouble with CPU usage and Heating.
On apple M2, Ventura 13.0.1 (22A400) noticed always cool laptop was warm. Activity monitor showed ShipIt with 100% kind intel. When I killed it, Arduino 2.0.1 IDE opened up.
Don't have AdGuard, billing or any of the others except Safari.
Had this going overnight on my Intel iMac overnight. I killed the Shiplt process and Authy immediately opened up.
Last night I had done an update to Authy when I was done using it and seemingly closed it out and went to bed.
I could hear the fans rev up now and again, but figured it was nightly tasks or Time Machine causing it to happen, which is not unusual for my computer. But I'm guessing now it was the unpacking of the Authy update.
In terminal this command: ~/Library/Caches/|grep ShipIt
resulted in: cc.arduino.IDE2.ShipIt com.github.GitHubClient.ShipIt com.microsoft.VSCode.ShipIt
all of which I updated or installed recently
For me it was discord.
I killed the Shiplt process and Workflowy immediately opened up.
(Nothing too surprising; I do use workflowy, and I imagine it was recently updated.)

Ran into this issue today on macOS 13.2. Turns out the culprit was Authy (com.authy.authy-mac.ShipIt)
Ran into the same problem today. My MBA M1 is nearly always docked, but today I picked it up and worked on it for about an hour in bed. It was noticeably warm the moment I picked it up (when it's ice-cool 99% of the time) and the battery drained like crazy.
I checked Activity Monitor, and 'ShipIt' was using 99% of the CPU. The moment I killed it WhatsApp opened up. IIRC there was an update for WA a couple of days ago.
Maybe Electron is the issue? Since Discord/other electron apps are also known to trigger the same issue?
