Element Desktop on Windows keeps failing to display properly after being in the background

Open WillPittenger opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Steps to reproduce

  1. Have Element running, but put it in the background and completely hidden.
  2. Attempt to bring it back to the foreground.

Outcome

What did you expect?

Element to still be running normally. This image shows that. For me, this is what happens 90% of the time. image

What happened instead?

Element was shown with only the window border and titlebar. The rest of the window was just white. Note: This doesn't happen all the time. But when it does, I sometimes have to restart Windows to resolve it. Other times, I try to wait a while. Simply closing and restarting Element might help. But I may get the same look immediately after the restart. image (It took several hours of waiting to this happen again.)

Operating system

Windows 11 Pro 24H2 OS Build 26100.2454 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.36.0

Application version

Element version: 1.11.86 Crypto version: Rust SDK 0.7.2 (517d99b), Vodozemac 0.7.0

How did you install the app?

Upgrading older apps

Homeserver

matrix.org

Will you send logs?

Yes

I've submitted several logs with /rageshake. No one seems to update the thread. But just now, I saw something new. The problem happened while in the foreground.

I'm having something like this happen for the first time today on Windows 11. I put my laptop to sleep with Element running and unplugged it over the weekend (from power and my external monitor which is set to be my main when plugged into the laptop). When I woke it this morning, Element was black except the window title bar. I closed the app and restarted it; it was still black. I tried deleting the GPUCache directory that is in the user's %AppData%\Element folder, but restarting the app both did not recreate the directory or start working properly. As I mouse over the window, the cursor changes and if I 'get lucky' hovering on where some action item (button, etc.), it displays an appropriate tooltip. Therefore, the app is actually up, it's just not drawing to the screen.

EDIT: (minutes later) a reboot fixed it this time, but that is not ideal.
