"The image failed to save" when trying to "Save image as..." in Riot Desktop

Open Edszx opened this issue 6 years ago • 10 comments

Description

When trying to save an image uploaded in a chatroom using right click > save image as, i get a popup error mesage saying:

Riot_2019-12-09_12-32-37

A second later, the dialog to select the location of the saved image pops up, but even if i select a valid location and press save, nothing really gets downloaded there, the only way i've been able to save images is opening the full link on a web browser and saving from there.

I've tried in direct 1 to 1 chats, v1 chatrooms, v5 chatrooms, it happens in all of them, it was also confirmed happening to every other user of my chatroom.

This is not a new issue, this has been happening more or less since 1.0, but i supposed it was something that would get easily noticed and fixed some versions later, it seems that was not the case.

Steps to reproduce

  • Right click on an image in Riot Desktop in Windows and select "Save image as..."
  • The error message pops up every time
  • The select location dialog pops up over the error message, but the image doesn't get saved anyways.

Logs being sent: yes

Version information

  • Platform: desktop

For the desktop app:

  • OS: Windows 10 LTSC 2019 (Also tested in LTSB 2016)
  • Version: 1.5.6 (But this has been happening since 1.0 give or take)

same issue here. really annoying because have to downoad each image by opening browser tab instead

And it's a thing of the desktop client, not related to matrix or anything, i've tried in different homeservers and the problem remains.

yes i think so. I already tried to find some more detailed log. Does Riot for windows has some logging? did not find sth. in %appdata%. The console CTRL+SHIFT+I did not reveal something regarding to this issue in my case

There is an option to send debug logs automatically, but i don't know where they are locally stored.

Still happening today with latest Element Desktop on Linux, installed from deb package.

Wait a minute... This was reported 4 years ago, and still has not been fixed? It happens with the Arch repository version 1.11.26 built on 29 March, 2023.

PS: I tried right-clicking and then choosing "Save image as". That caused the error, but clicking the downward arrow above the image could successfully download it. If the developers are not going to support right-click download, then they should have disabled it... Or they should have made the right-click download invoke the same function as the downward arrow button.

Also, when an image is clicked, and so get enlarged, there appear buttons at the top-right corner, and that includes a downward arrow button (Download). If I click it, it does not download the image, but opens the image with the default web browser. Why are all these three download buttons all do different actions? Shouldn't all three invoke the same action?

This is still happening, I am on current Pop OS (Ubuntu derivative), using the fully updated element-desktop package from the official element apt repo.

The following button opens Firefox, which chokes on the provided link. This is the screen that shows up when one clicks on an image to display it by itself.

The following context menu item opens a save file dialog, but choosing to save the file throws an error. This is the context menu for an image that was clicked on and enlarged.

Finally, the following button seems to be the only one that actually works: opens a file save dialog, which then saves the image successfully. This is in the main chat window.

Replicated on Ubuntu 24.04 and "Microsoft Windows 11 Business version 24H2 ( 10.0.26100 )" with element-desktop 1.12.2.

This bug is 6+ years old and it's REALLY funny.

still a problem today. a daily annoyance. using the full link shows only "not found"

having to save on the phone app, and transfer to the pc.
