Adding Voice Only Calls

Open DEVXIX opened this issue 6 months ago • 12 comments

Your use case

What would you like to do?

Add a button that directly, allow the user to use voice call instead of a video call on Element Apps such as Element X

Why would you like to do it?

Because having a separate, voice only icon, is convenient for most users who would rather do voice call only, if video call is not needed

How would you like to achieve it?

Adding it to Element X would enhance the application, this was previously available on Element IOS but isn't available on Element X

Have you considered any alternatives?

Not really

Additional context

I currently have my own version of the previous Element IOS , I really like the work on Element X and want to migrate, so i would like to ask for audio calls on private/group calls

Adding an option for audio calls next to video calls inside the room / private chats

IMHO UX needs redesign with proper solution to not connect to video feed by partipicants who don't want it

This is also important to me.

May be worth having the video feed off by default instead, at least until there's a better idea of what the general UX for element-call is supposed to be.

I think this is not enough on mobile because audio call means earpiece audio output by default whereas video means speaker output. It may be that other VoIP options change the audio output automatically, but I think the proper solution for element x would be a specific loudspeaker button like on a normal call.

Yes, please, this has not my 100%, but 1000% support. :)) It should have been created the other way around. Whether for work calls with colleagues (I don't mean screen sharing, which has its uses at work.) or for playing games with friends in the evening, pure voice is far more important than video transmission, which is more niche.

I'm sorry, but why this ticket has been closed? The linked issue has nothing with the current one.

Unfortunately I still don't see any "Voice call" button in iOS app, and my headset is not active by default in prior to speaker phone. This means the interlocutors occasionally expose their picture when they don't intend to, and also they expose the private conversation on public joining to any call, everybody can hear it.

I also vote for this feature. Thanks.

Hey. So #3493 enables the ability for clients to signal whether they'd like to start a voice or video call. However, support across Element clients is pretty weak at the moment. https://github.com/element-hq/element-web/pull/30817 will enable support for Element Web but work for the EX platforms is in progress.

I'll re-open the issue as currently we don't have good platform support.
