Facebook acting jumpy

Open Oakwine opened this issue 7 years ago • 9 comments

On Facebook ( www.facebook.com ), for the last few days, the feed display jumps up and down, as if an ad is continually hidden and unhidden. Turning uBlock off stops the jumping. Since it is only this version where people are complaining, it is possible that there is an upstream fix that hasn't been addressed for this version.

There are additional people reporting this issue on Reddit: ( https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/7ieyll/ads_have_been_appearing_on_facebook_for_the_last/dr1cg84/ ) and ( https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/7j2pz0/ublock_and_facebook_acting_weird/ ).

A screenshot cannot display the problem.

The steps to display this are to visit Facebook while signed in and scroll down with uBlock-Safari active. Occasionally, the screen will jump up and down.

  • MacOS version: 10.13.2 (was also occurring on the previous version)
  • Safari version: 11.0.2
  • uBlock Origin version: 1.14.14

Probably related to cosmetic filtering of the Facebook ads inside a stream. There is no magic solution, you will have to either choose to keep cosmetic filtering and not see the ads, or disable cosmetic filtering and see the ads.

Same problem here. I do not have this issue with another popup blocker, are you certain this cannot be fixed? Made a video of the issue:

Do you have the issue with Chrome or Firefox?

Safari. I found the best fix: install fb purity and disable the ad blocker on facebook. No adblocker performs very well on Facebook so this is probably the best solution. It does not fix the bug however of course.

To fix this safari version just needs to be synced with mainline. pretty sure they fixed this in firefox chrome version. which is likely why gorhill asked if it's only safari. It's been quite a few updates since a sync. hope for one soon.

I've the same problem with jumpy Facebook. But no problems on Firefox or Chrome on Facebook, only Safari.

MacOS: 10.13.2 Safari: 11.0.2 uBlockOrigin: 1.14.14

Same issue with macOS 10.11.6 / Safari 11.0.2 / uBlock Origin 1.14.14. No issues with Firefox / Chrome with uBlock Origin 1.14.18 or 1.14.22.

@el1t , would it be possible to release the Safari extension for the latest uBlock Origin 1.14.22?

Agree with the sentiment that the solution is not to disable ad blocking for Facebook, but rather to bring the outdated Safari version of uBlock up to parity with the the Chrome and Firefox versions.

Safari remains the best browser on a Mac for various reasons and I’m growing increasingly annoyed at efforts to persuade users to switch to something else.
