Install process fails to install 1.16.0

Describe the issue

When installing (manual installation) from 1.16.0 always comes the following error message:

Safari can not install this extension. An error occurred while installing the uBlock Origin extension.

Update does not appear in the settings under Extensions.

One or more specific URLs where the issue occurs

Your settings

• MacOS version: 10.13.4
• Safari version: 11.1
• uBlock Origin version: 1.15.4

I had the same issue and it turned out to be extension gallery related. I made a backup and uninstalled 1.15.4 downloaded from the gallery. I was then able to install 1.16.0 downloaded from here. I'm on 10.11.6 though.
