I'm going to close this PR, because it was opened before the restructuring to external plugins. It's not worth trying to rebase just for this old unfinished PR.

If you want to make a PR off of the current state of the project to address this, you're welcome to. But we'll need to make sure the same changes are made in any plugins that use requests as well.
