Localisation of accessibility informations

Open gautierchomel opened this issue 8 months ago • 13 comments

Dear Translators, the next Thorium will include an important part to translate, concerning the display of accessibility metadata. Those are all the keys starting with publ-a11y-display-guide.

You can start to localise this part now, as it may take some time to complete. If you need more context to translate those sentences, you can refer to the Accessibility metadata display guide 2.0.

If possible, we recommend asking for counsel or validation from national organisations involved in accessibility. I will also be available if you have any doubts and would like clarification on the meaning of a sentence.

Those informations are provided as Compact sentences that will be directly displayed in the book information panel and Descriptive sentences that will be displayed as a tooltip on mouse over of a question mark icon at the end of each line.

Description with screenshot:

Thorium Desktop book information panel screenshot
The book information panel shows two titles: Publication details and Accessibility. The accessibility section is composed of the always shown titles Ways of Reading and Navigation. Then a "More Information" toggle button can include other accessibility information if they are available. The compact sentences are displayed and the descriptive ones are available as title of the line element, visually marked by a question mark pictogram.

Hi, I have some questions about terminology. First, there are two phrases: “Slide to the left” and “Slide to the right.” I’m not sure about the actual meaning of these two phrases. Does the word “slide” in these phrases specifically mean “go to the previous page” and “go to the next page,” or does it literally mean “slide the content to the left” or “slide the content to the right”? Second, in parentheses, there is a phrase written as {{- appName}}. Regarding this, I need to understand the exact meaning of AppName for an accurate translation. Does AppName refer to a Windows application, or is it a file imported into Thorium Reader? Best,

@oguzugur28 you can refer to the Localisation context table

  • slide is used in the library window context and refer to showing the next 5 publications
  • {{- appName}} will be replaced by "Thorium"

gautierchomel avatar May 05 '25 15:05 gautierchomel

Well then, "Hide {{- appName}}" will be replaced with "Hide Thorium Reader", and "Quit {{- appName}}" will be replaced with "Quit Thorium Reader". Am I correct?

Also, based on your explanation, I understand that "Slide to the left" and "Slide to the right" actually slide the context to the left or right really. Am I correct?

@oguzugur28 It will be Thorium

@panaC Thanks, i will be translated them as a "Thorium Reader".

oguzugur28 avatar May 06 '25 16:05 oguzugur28

@oguzugur28, it's a placeholder that will be automatically replaced. Just let the {{- appName}} at the place you want "Thorium Reader" to appear.

@gautierchomel

Hi,

I understand the logic behind these placeholders, but the structure of the Turkish language is very different from that of the Indo-European language family. Therefore, placeholders indicated with parentheses must be placed before the word in Turkish. For instance, “Close (AppName)” should be translated into Turkish as “AppName'ı Kapat” (e.g., Thorium Reader'ı Kapat).

That’s why I really need to understand what each placeholder refers to. If the “AppName” placeholder always refers to an app, then the translation is straightforward. If it refers to a file, that’s also manageable. However, if sometimes it refers to a file and other times to an app, then the translation becomes more challenging.

Therefore I'm writing so much about this issue.

AppName placeholder always refers to the same word. So it is for each placeholder.

Hi, What's mean that "Import Extract"? Is it mean that "Import Citation" or "Import Abstract"? Best,

oguzugur28 avatar May 19 '25 13:05 oguzugur28

Hi, Could you inform me about the question above? What's mean that "Import Extract"? Is it mean that "Import Citation" or "Import Abstract"? I need to learn context of that sentences to translate correctly. Best,

Hi, This issue was closed and I can't access the Weblate translation area but unfortunately Turkish translation hasn't complete yet. What should I do? Additionally, I asked many questions under this issue because this is my first wide-range translation project. Therefore, I am apolagising from all of you. Best,

oguzugur28 avatar Jun 28 '25 10:06 oguzugur28

Hello, the Weblate is open, were you able to access it before or is this your first time?
