Broken encoding responses from service worker in Safari

In safari (both desktop and mobile, but in slightly different ways) some responses to htmx requests generated by the service worker start with broken encoding characters (eg mongo driver page starts with ��0W , postgres diesel with ����D�). Haven't seen this in chrome or in full page responses from the server. Right now I have no idea what might cause this
