Good News!

This orb was first authored in 2018, and has served over 10,000,000 builds. 

But as of March, 2025, it is not longer supported as CircleCI now supports native 
serialization. 
- The author will no longer accept enhancement requests effectively immediately.
- The CircleCI team is planning to remove v1 APIs used by this orb in the future.

Users of this orb are encouraged to adopt the `serial-group` stanza instead.

Sorry to hear, native serialization does not suit our needs 😓 We need workflows (or, at least, group of jobs) to run as a serial group.

@eddiewebb We also need to continue using the orb. Native functionality does not support blocking workflow if previous workflow is running. It only blocks on jobs, which is unsuitable if you have parallel jobs that all need to wait. I understand what deprecation means and that we can continue to use this, I just wanted to note that this orb isn't obsolete.

We parallelize 5 AWS Code Deploy jobs, 3 migration tasks, and a lambda update, where none of them should run if any of them are still running on a previous pipeline. With the new system, it's impossible to make this happen afaik. I can make all 9 jobs serial across all pipelines, but that means no jobs are parallel. I can use serial-gate on every job with different keys, but then migrations on new pipelines can run while deployments are still running on the previous pipelines (for example.)

@BrentOnRails please vote on https://circleci.canny.io/cloud-feature-requests/p/allow-serial-groups-to-wrap-multiple-jobs and mark your concerns as a comment. I am no longer with CircleCI but know the PM overseeing the serial-group was interesting in this sort of evidence.

Deprecated means I will not actively build out new features, but it will continue to exist.
