Describe alternatives you've considered The use of primary MAC or serial number as unique identifier of a system is very fallible because the serial number is not properly supported through multiple distros and hardware and the primary MAC address forces the use of static MAC (not necessarily desirable in wireless applications) and is hard to track when the no-network firmware is in use.
