Run custom command when timer finishes

I'm looking to play a random audio file from a specific playlist when the timer finishes. I could accomplish this easily if I could run a command upon timer finish and have VLC do the random/playlist part.

This got me thinking it would potentially make all sorts of other interesting things possible, such as switching smart home appliances; starting a python script which would call IFTTT or Zapier; ETC.
