wal not reloading wallpaper using xwallpaper on openbox login

In my openbox autostart I have wal -R and am using xwallpaper. The screen is black when I login and I have to run wal -R again to have the wallpaper display. Other environments work fine and don't seem to have this problem.

Can anyone point out what I might be doing wrong? Thanks.
