Debris from killed player always uses blue ship colors

Open vLKp opened this issue 9 years ago • 4 comments

When the red player dies in an anarchy match, whether by reactor, lava, suicide, or collision with another player, the debris ejected from the red player's ship looks like it comes from the blue ship, not the red ship. This can be easily reproduced in an anarchy game by suiciding as the red player. This was broken in 0.57.3 and still applies to current tip. It may be broken even farther back.

I do have to admit that in all my life I haven't played enough Multiplayer to actively notice that. :) But that raises the question: Does the game even provide debris models with different player textures. I could honestly not say if this may be an oversight in the original game and if those debris are able to use differently colored textures. But I'd say it's a rather minor issue - so I'm gonna put it on my list but a bit further down.

I noticed it because I went through a lot of deaths very quickly while testing the secluded spawns feature. Even then, some of the deaths released debris in a way that I could not see any color-specific parts. I suggest deferring this until after the next release. It has been broken for a very long time and no one has complained, so I see no reason to hold the release for it.

Ah, I just did some testing, and it seems this quirk has existed from the start. In the original D1 and D2 engines, your ship explodes into blue-colored debris regardless of its color, but only on your own screen. Other players will see your ship explode without creating any debris. I don't know for sure, but I have a feeling zico's right about the game files having only blue-colored debris models. :-)

I have not investigated it but it may be possible that the player specific colors are just flatpoly's with a custom color. In this case, it could be possible to assign the specific player color.

If not, @ryusei117 brought up an interesting idea: Since you don't see debris from other players in Multiplayer, we could simply solve the issue by having local player ships in Multiplayer not spew debris either.
