Q: What if a client wants me (as an individual) to do a piece of non-related work for them...
Opening this up as an issue for discussions related to this question:
"Q: What if a client wants me (as an individual) to do a piece of non-related work for them outside of F&C after I met them through an F&C freelance project?"
A: If working as a freelancer for F&C you promise not to undercut F&C. Therefore if a client wants you to do work, then you would charge them a rate that would not save them money by hiring you directly.
My tuppenceworth: if they want you to rake their garden of autumn leaves or walk their dog, then that's your gig. If they want you to do anything with the skills that FAC gave you while you're still a part of FAC, then that project should go through FAC/DWYL.
@jackpandas good question. what @rub1e said... :+1:
For _two_ simple reasons:
- Support - if a person has worked with a client through a relationship formed by "The Team" then the client will expect "The Team" to support any work that gets done. So if an individual undertakes work that builds on top of work delivered by "The Team" and that "new" work requires any maintenance/updates/bug-fixing the client will call "The Team" ...
- Time Management - Clients always _expect_ to be the centre of your Universe. If you work with anyone "solo" (or without a specific contract) then the demands on your time will inevitably exceed the allocation you originally expected to devote to the work... Doing work through "The Team" means having a "bad cop" who will protect your time and (politely) say "_No_" on your behalf when demands get un-realistic.
This is not to say that "all" clients will place "unreasonable" demands on your time, but in our experience they often don't know what is involved in the work we do and think that everything is _simple_ ... "The Team" will protect you from "_Why isn't it done yet_" ...
@jackpandas does that answer your question? To summarise: I don't think we would prevent anyone from working on something for a client. We would like to have a culture where additional work that goes above and beyond for the client is encouraged, all we would ask is that the work is conducted within a framework where others are aware of it so we can support you. :+1:
