Can we just use the arrow to the left and invisible vertical lines.

Describe the bug

When I update my system to 12.4, the vertical line become invisible(but it's still a placeholder). spreads Screen Shot 2022-06-15 at 21 31 44 closure Screen Shot 2022-06-15 at 21 33 50

I think the invisible vertical lines increase the sense of space. I like it, can we consider this format? 👻

Support this feature too, get rid of the normal vertical line.. replace it with >< toggle, it can serve both functions as toggle display/hide and marker for hidden items (or make this space saving mode an option, preference access with 2finger click). Only leave the vertical line for always hidden items.

Rewrote the code that addressed this issue (although the placeholders are still there), see this PR #261.
