Question marks instead of characters

I'm using the 1.1.26 version of the addon (from the Firefox addon site) with Waterfox 55.2.2, and every time I try to search for something containing cjk characters, the search instead replaces all those characters with question marks. So, for example if I search for "テスト無題 testing", it searches for "????? testing" Here's a screenshot:

Found a quick fix: Under Preferences, go to "Search" and click on "Restore Default Search Engines", and proceed to remove whatever isn't needed. It seems that the addon has previously made a faulty entry under that search engine list. Now everything works as expected.
