[Bug] Site icons keep disappearing

I found the cause of the problem. The website icons (favicons) are stored in the cache, and the system clears the cache. If the icons for bookmarked domains are stored in a persistent directory, the problem will be resolved.

Describe the bug

When I open a new tab, the favorite bookmarks on the screen are very hard to read—the text is small but the icons are large. And the site icons keep disappearing, being replaced by the first letter of the URL.

How to Reproduce

When there is little free space on the device, the icons disappear.

Expected behavior

Site icons should not disappear.

Hi @person12675! Could you provide the version of the app where the issue happens and a screenshot?

Hi

The version I’m currently using is 5.240.0. But this isn’t an issue unique to this version—it’s been happening for at least two months.

It would be much clearer if Favorites were displayed as a list instead of a grid. Right now I’m struggling to figure out which site is which—some icons don’t even appear and only a small fragment of each title shows—making the app extremely uncomfortable to use.

Access to bookmarks also needs to be easier, since that’s one of the most frequently used features in a browser. Currently, I have to hunt through a context-sensitive menu for the “Bookmarks” item. I think the “Bookmarks” item and the “Downloads” item should be added directly to the Favorites screen.

And of course, thank you for all your hard work.

Hey @person12675! Thanks for the information 🙌

If you notice any kind of pattern to this it would be great if you could come back here and leave a comment as I could not reproduce it.

I've also passed this on to the relevant team to investigate at some point in future.

Thanks to you, I realized that I had left something out. The disappearance of these icons is not a rare occurrence. I have about 30 favorites. I’ve never seen more than 10 of their icons displayed at once. Most of the time, I only see between zero and five of them.

I should mention that the source of this problem might not be the app but my device, since I know there are software issues on it. I’m using the original ROM.

I have identified how the problem occurs. When there is little free space on the device, the icons disappear. I am not closing the issue because I believe this is something that needs to be fixed.

Although there is enough free space on the device, the icons have disappeared again. Where does the app store the icons? If it stores them in the same place as bookmarks and settings, they won’t be deleted, because those aren’t deleted.

Also, please add a list view to favorites; this is very important. If a list view is added, it will be easier to understand which item belongs to which site, even if the icons are missing.
