[Bug] Very hard or impossible to select link text

Open bartvanandel opened this issue 8 months ago • 4 comments

Describe the bug

On normal text, long press initiates selection mode. However, for hyperlinks, this triggers the link popup menu. This makes it almost impossible to select text which is a link, especially when it's an isolated piece of text, i.e., without any text surrounding it.

Ideally, add an item "select link text" to the popup menu. This would solve the problem in the most elegant way possible, IMO.

Having an option "copy link text" would also work, but may be less flexible.

Having both would be heaven!

How to Reproduce

So easy to reproduce. Example:

  • Go to https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/2042880/lg-ultrafine-27uq850v-w-wit.html
  • Try to select the product name in the title, i.e., "LG UltraFine 27UQ850V-W Wit"
  • Get frustrated

This isn't even the most frustrating page ever because there is some surrounding text further down (and in the end the title was nicely copied as a hyperlink). But it's annoying for sure.

For comparison, Chrome on Android already offers this option.

Expected behavior

Offer to select and/or copy link text when long pressing some text with a hyperlink behind it.

Environment

- DDG App Version: 5.229.0 (would be nice if long press offered a "copy" action here as well)
- Device: Samsung S23
- OS: Android 14 (OneUI 6.1)

@bartvanandel Thank you for your feedback! You're right, having the option to copy the link text sounds like something that should be possible. I'll discuss it with the team.

Related but different: looks like it's currently inpossible to select just part of the URL in the web address field. It's either select all or select none.

In general, looks like link selection can use some improvements.
