external materializations : what about overriding builtins.ref macro to get rid of views creation ?

Hi, I am wondering if there is a hidden goal behind creation of views for external materializations ? A sort of catalog ? If not, what about overriding builtins.ref macro ? I used this when I coded the dremio adapter a few years ago, and was willing to help if you find that useful.
