Track "Phone-dependent desktop app"

Open maltfield opened this issue 1 year ago • 0 comments

This is a request to add a new row (called Mobile-dependent desktop app) to the spreadsheet that tracks whether or not the desktop "client" for an app is actually a real independent client, or if it just relays messages through the mobile client.

Problem

Many messaging apps (eg Whatsapp, Signal, Threema, Telegram) have developed desktop/web apps that allow you to send & receive messages from a computer, but they aren't really independent from the mobile client. Either you can't use them at all if your phone is off or you must first register the account on a phone before you can use them.

On the other hand, many other messaging apps (eg Wire, Matrix) have actually developed desktop apps that are entirely independent. You do not ever need to register an account on a phone app to use them.

This important difference is currently not being tracked by privacyspreadsheet.com

Solution

A new row (called Mobile-dependent desktop app) will display if an app's desktop implementation depends on a phone install or not.

If the app's desktop app does not require a phone app at all, then a green Yes should appear.

If the app's desktop app cannot be used unless the user also creates an account on a phone app, then a red No should appear.
